10 years ago, my dog was found by some friends of ours by a roadside on Beggar’s Night. For a doggy with such rough beginnings, 10 is quite a feat. The real cake should go to my mom, who was the puppy expert that got her through. Without my mom and our wonderful friends, Karm never would have made it. As Karma grew up, I bonded with her and she eventually came to sleep next to me in my bed, taking most of it for herself. Now that I’m married, we all decided that Karm would stay with my parents and her two “sisters.” Since she can’t see, we agreed that taking her to a whole new place without other dogs wouldn’t be good on her. We decided to go visit her all the time instead, and it’s working out wonderfully since I miss all the girls anyway. I love getting to sit on the couch and be attacked with love and kisses from three giant doggies.
Since we have a small kitchen in our starter place, I often bake at my parents house, and that is where I baked all those dog treats we gave away on “Barker’s Night.” I also made some little pupcakes for Karma the night before so they would be ready for her celebration. I wanted something that screamed fall, so I adapted my recipe for the “Fall Extravaganza” treats for a cupcake and I would say it was a hit!
I also found some old silicone molds I had gotten and I decided heart shaped cupcakes would be absolutely perfect! I did something new with the frosting and I decided to do a bacon garnish. Since they are completely human friendly, a part of me almost wanted to take a bite! But since most of the dog treats I’ve tried aren’t what I would consider human tasty, I refrained this time.
As always, there are three plates ready to go because the sisters need to all have cake together. It’s always so precious to watch them eat their cake. They each take it to their own little place just for them where they think nobody else will come bother them. Of course they don’t mind us taking pictures of them like crazy “puparazzi,” but heaven forbid their sisters try and get their treat. The worse they’ll do is run even further away, but the girls are all so busy with their own food, they don’t have time to try and scrounge for anybody else’s.

Needless to say, we had a lovely night handing out candy, handing out dog treats, and celebrating Karma being double digits!
Fall Pupcakes Recipe
Cake Ingredients: Makes 8
- 1/2 c. pumpkin puree (all natural)
- 1/3 c. unsweetened applesauce
- 1 egg
- 1/4 c. natural peanut butter
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 c. old fashioned oats
- 3 strips turkey bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
Frosting: For half the cupcakes, double the recipe to frost all 8.
- 1/4 c. unsweetened applesauce
- 2 T. natural peanut butter
In a large mixing bowl, add the first 4 ingredients and stir until thoroughly combined. Add in the next four and make sure to stir them in well and use a spatula around the rim so that none of the dry ingredients get stuck to the edge of the bowl. Lastly, stir the flour in just until combined and almost no lumps remain.
Grease your cupcake tins or molds with olive oil before pouring the batter in. This should make 8 cakes when filled 3/4 of the way full. I fill them more than a normal cupcake because these don’t rise as much.
Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Once they are cooled, mix your peanut butter and applesauce together and frost the cupcakes. I also put a dab under the cupcakes for a little surprise and I added a bacon garnish.
Enjoy watching your pup and their friends be delighted!
